Conversations with Karen – Therapeutic Tutor

by KarenM on April 15, 2013 · 1 comment

Welcome to my Kids In Victoria blog. I have been a therapeutic tutor in Victoria for almost 25 years. My focus has been on children who are really struggling at school, particularly with reading, writing, spelling or math. Some students come to me with self-esteem issues, fears, anxieties, anger and frustration. All of these get in the way of learning, so I’ve become very effective in dealing with them.

Therapeutic tutoring is a completely different way of teaching math and language arts. It has been developed over 100 years to help children who are struggling at school. Although our school system is successful with many kids, my sessions don’t follow the government curriculum. (For an in-depth explanation of therapeutic tutoring, visit my website.)

My purpose in writing this blog is three-fold.

First, I want to open a conversation with you to discuss options for your children. What questions do you need answered? What are your concerns? What do you feel your child needs? What needs to be different? What have you tried that has worked? Not worked?

Some of the topics I can be helpful with are specific how-to’s for you to help your child with: math, reading, spelling, writing, self-esteem, anger, fears, anxiety, how to bring out the best in your child, how to bring out the best in yourself as a parent, how to create the family you want to have. I’m really interested in what you need to support you, your child and your family.

Second, I am developing products that you can use to help your child at school. The first one is an abacus program for preschoolers through third grade. This abacus program will prevent math learning difficulties, help 6 to 8-year-olds who are struggling, and prepare preschoolers for kindergarten. It will be useful for people of all ages, but will be age-appropriate for younger children. I am looking for families to beta test it. Please contact me if you’re interested.

Third, I want to create awareness of what I do and discover how I can serve you, and families like yours. I don’t obligate people. I offer a complimentary tutoring session as a way for you to come and check me out to see if I’m a good fit for your child. I also do workshops for parents. I’m happy to pass on to you anything I’ve learned that will help you or your child.

Please take advantage of my complimentary, no obligation, assessment to see if therapeutic tutoring is the best option for your child. Feel free to email me your story or to ask questions at karenswift@shaw.ca or call me at 778-430-3183. For more information go to karenmurdoch.ca.

Hi there,

We have a daughter in grade 7 who has struggled with spelling and reading for many years. We are wondering what your rates are and how your system works – do we meet you somewhere or do you work out of our house? Is it individual or group?

Thanks,
Christine
