Family Meals ~ Serving Dinner Family Style

by Nicole on April 18, 2013 · 0 comments

Family style is serving your meal at the table and letting your family and friends serve themselves. This a great opportunity to model manners and portion sizes to your children. Letting children serve themselves also empowers them and in turn is another way to support good self esteem. It allows them to feel control over their choices and have equal importance at the dinner table.

If this is not your normal dinner routine, start small. Serve your salad or veggies as family style and allow your children to choose their veggies on their own. This might also encourage them to eat more vegetables or even try new ones. Once your family has mastered vegetables family style, you could move on to other sides and then main courses. This is also an excellent time for conversation and connection.

Family Style can be adapted to your family’s beliefs, transitions and needs; there is no one routine that fits everyone. Please help little ones with item that maybe hot or at risk for burns. Safety should always be a priority and your family style dinner might just focus on cool sides and salad until your children are older.

Here is an easy salad that could be a big hit at your next family style meal.
