I’ve been making things to sell in various places and haven’t written anything in a long time. Working on a project earlier today, I found myself singing the songs and reciting the poems I used to teach moms, dads, and grandparents in my Games to Play With a Baby programs. It’s a great parenting tool to have songs and poems immediately to hand. It keeps not only babies amused but is also entertaining and fun for toddlers and older children. Here’s a poem I was reciting earlier today.
Spring (author unknown)
Frogs croak,
Rains soak.
Chicks peep.
Crickets leap.
Bees hum.
Robins come.
Birds sing.
It’s Spring
And a poem by one of my favourite poets for children – Aileen Fisher:
Spring’s the Word by Aileen Fisher
Spring up, seedlings, weedlings, clover!
Spring out, leaves, now winter’s over.
Spring up, green things!
There’s a reason
Spring’s the name to fit the season.
And new words to an old tune
The Rain (To the tune of four and twenty blackbirds) (author unknown)
Pitter-patter, raindrops,
Falling from the sky;
Here is my umbrella,
To keep me safe and dry.
When the rain is over,
And the sun begins to glow,
Little flowers start to bud,
And grow and grow and grow!
I can’t sing the songs in this forum, but I do have a CD. Follow the link and you’ll be able to hear some clips.
Poems, rhymes, and songs all add a richness to a baby’s and toddler’s experience of language. Singing helps you to breathe more deeply which helps to exercise the abdominal muscles. Have fun!
