Age appropriate chores for 7 yr old?

Postby jbnnl on Thu Jan 12, 2012 2:55 pm

New year, looking for new suggestions for light chores for our 7yr old boy
We have hardwood floors so no vacuuming ect.

-Make Bed
-clothes in laundry basket
-good behavior

What do your kids do?

We also have a 4 year old who is interested in helping out any ideas?

Thanks!

Help sort/fold laundry.
Set/clear table.
Help with pet care(if applicable).
Help put groceries away.

My mum used to give my sister and I each a pail and when it was full of weeds from the garden she would take us to my Auntie's house to swim in her pool. There's lots of little things that don't seem like chores but could definitely be considered "helping".

Great Post!

Ours are:

-Folding the tclean owels
-unloading the sliverware in the dishwasher (no fear of breaking them) no sharp knives
-Dirty clothes go in his laundry basket
-When the laundry basket is full, he needs to say something.
-Go through all his pockets before we wash his clothes, for rocks and chestnuts, frogs ect
-Clear his dishes off the table after a meal.
-Help take the recycling out
-and do his homework

help set/put stuff away to/from the table
help get laundry to the basement and is learning to help sort as well as put stuff in the washer with one of us(she loves laundry)
fed pets
paper and recycle to the curb on garbage day
clean room
she likes to sweep and dust and I let her(if need be I will redo it when she is in school or bed so she doesn't know I did)
help bring in the groceries
help write out the list for shopping
put socks, face clothes, panties away

she is also responsible to get her back pack ready for school and clothes laid out the night before and lunch bag into her back pack in the morning.
We also expect her to help out when asked as we are a family so we do need to help each other out.
Talk without offending.
Listen without defending.

Mine helps to take out the recycling and the bottles.
Helps to clean the playroom toys.

$2.50 a week is what he gets for an allowance (actually goes straight to his bank account saving up for a Nintendo 3DS.

11- makes desserts :)
picks up dog poop
sets table and undoes it
takes out garbage and recycle
does her own clothes
punishments- wash the bathroom (I love this one )
vacuums
makes her own school lunch
brings in firewood
unpacks groceries
dusting

5-puts her clothes away
undoes the dishwasher
sets the table and undoes it
vacuums (her favorite chore)
picks up her own toys
helps with dog poop
learning to make food also.
learning to make her school lunch.
learning to dust

OMG lol I make my kids do alot :P but everything is also done as a family. My DH god daughter stayed with us this summer for 3 weeks, she is 20 years old and did not know how to do anything. She was surprised that my 5 year old knew how to vacuum. I was amazed that someone that age was never taught by their parents how to do anything. I asked what she would when she moved away from mommy's house. She sd her mom would make all her food so she could freeze it then microwave.... FYI I also found out that her twin brothers (17) btw still wear matching clothes every day. :-k

Maybe I make my kids do a lot but I really want them to also be able to do their own thing IMO. They also have lots of play time.

My 5 year olds:

- scoop dog poop
- bring the empty recylcing bins and garbage bin up the driveway after school on garbage day
- unload the dishwasher (not the knives)
- fill the cat feeder and water dish and feed their fish
- sort, fold (kind of lol) and put their laundry away
- help sort recycling
- hang up their coats and bring up their lunch kits after school
- they LOVE to vacuum but usually we need to go over it again after they are done.

Didn't read all replies, so this may be repetitive:

My 7 year old puts away her laundry, cleans up her room/own messes and helps with her 2 yo sister's messes too. Feeds the dog, clears the table and puts dishes in the dishwasher. We have started a rotating chore list for her and her little sister (5), so that is where we are at for this month.

My 5 yo puts away her laundry, cleans up her room/messes, helps clean 2yo's room, and feeds the cat. They also both help out with whatever tasks we ask of them as well throughout the day.

Our little kids have done chores and were 4 and 7 when they started.

The list is
- separate dirty laundry into piles
- separate clean laundry into people sets
- empty dishwasher - non- breakable for 4 year old.
- fill Dishwasher
- sweep hardwood.
- empty recycling
- garbage to garage
- fill vitamins

5 chores = 2$ but no allowance and they have to do 2 chores per week with rest optional.
Cleaning room is not a paid chore nor other expected things we all do.
Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren't used to an environment where excellence is expected.

so do some of you give allowance anyways, as a given? and they can earn more by doing chores from a list or whatever?

It's great to see so many parents giving their kids chores at all different ages as well. Kids love to help and you might as well get them used to it while they are young so it carries on when they are older. To many times I see what happens when kids don't do anything at home and Mom and Dad do it all, not pretty!
I have a 14, 12 and 8 year old, they all work together as a team to get things done around the house after school when dh and I are working. A lot of the same things I have seen posted already, dishes, recycling, pet care etc. The 14 year old does a bit more especially in the summer when they are off. He helps make meals for his siblings and if I need the 8 year old taken anywhere he does it. I feel it's important to make kids as independent as possible it just makes life easier when they are ready to head out into the world and my sons future wives will be glad that they have the skills to clean a house properly!

We have a 6 year old and an 8 year old and they are paid an allowance for doing dinner dishes (Clearing table, unloading and loading dishwasher and cleaning up kitchen), Taking garbage out, vacuuming living room, keep fire wood bins outside stocked.

What they are NOT paid for and are expected to do is keep room clean, tidy any messes up and do immediately anything that is asked of them.

We are also slowly implementing kitchen helper. They help cook and bake and that is the more fun aspect of making the house hold run but also necessary to start learning.

I have a 10 and 7 year old and they both have chores.

Unload silverware basket in dishwasher
Remove all dishes from table
Put folded clothes away in drawers
Tidy room and rec room
put dog out
Pick up dog poop
Feed and water dog
Feed fish
Make bed
Help make school lunches (or at least get them started so all I have to do is make sandwiches or fill thermoses)

My 10 year old often helps sweep our house which is most hardwood - I generally get him to sweep the downstairs because he and his sister spend alot of time there so they can have a hand in cleaning it up.
