Sharing childcare expenses w/ex?

Postby peanutbuttercup on Sun Jul 22, 2012 6:22 pm

Curious how other families share childcare costs? If you or your ex make more money than the other, do you split costs proportionate to income? Or do you just do a 50/50 split of the costs?

Trying to figure out what is fair financially here...

When my husband and I were separated and I was looking into all the financial aspects, I was told child care is split proportionally to income.

If I were in your shoes, I would go figure out all the financial things you have to deal with with a professional and make sure everything is in order. When we were first separated I didn't, and ended up regretting it later. He did too.

Child support is governed by the child support guidelines - income based. Extraordinary expenses are dealt with under section 7 of those guidelines and are typically shared on an income proportionate basis.

I should note that it is advisable to work with your ex on things that are considered to be s.7 expenses as spending the money unilaterally without consulting the ex first may result in a court finding he does not have an obligation to contribute to them.... (they must be reasonable and neccessary expenses)

My ex and I split the Daycare expenses according to our income. He makes over twice the income I do so he does pay more towards the costs.
