Teaching DD how to tell time tips?

Postby OnceHarmony on Sun Dec 09, 2012 4:56 pm

I think it's time.

Does anyone have any tips, tricks, books, websites, games to make this less stressful for us and fun for her. How did you do it? Thanks. :)

She's around 8-10 right?

I use a digital as well as analog clock so they can see the relationship between the number and the position of the hands. Personally, I find the whole numbers thing a little overwhelming for them. So, I get them to look at a clock with dashes... We look at 15, 30 and 45 minutes first. Then we count by 5's

And, then we look at hours... Tie the hours into significant events like breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Get them to predict how long it takes to get things done... this is always fun! They have no idea at first.

Thanks.

No, she's not that age. I would hope that she would know how to tell time by age 10

Thanks for your tips jj. I'll implement those.

I found a telling time board game that is helping. It's hard for to get the quarter after and such.

:D :D :D

When I was teaching I had to teach a grade 7 student how to tell time. She had never learned and I realised from her perspective that it is rather cryptic. She didn't understand the 5 minutes... so we guestimated using spacial relationships of 1/4 an hour, 1/2 an hour and 3/4 hour. Once she could split the 'pie' she got it.

My daughter, whose 8 says to me sometimes.... I had to wait a whole 2 minutes for you, Mummy!

The way I learned to tell the minute hand from the hour hand...

The word "minute" is longer than the word "hour" thus the minute hand is longer than the hour hand! :D

That's a great way to remember that tip Shanny! My DD, who just turned 11 yesterday, still can't tell the time. :(
Or tie her shoes. :o

Charlene- My Step-DD didn't learn to tie her shoes or read the time till she was 11, and now she does it no problem :)

That makes me feel a wee bit better, thank you! :)

I feel like I need to make a bigger effort to teach her these skills, but it is a huge exercise in frustration on both our parts when I do so. :( :(

She didn't learn to ride her bike without training wheels until she was 9.5! But, I will cut her some slack, as she has been diagnosed with a learning disorder. ;-)

We bought the Time Clock game at Buddies Toys. It is great. My DD is 9.

The big thing is counting by 5's. once they get that then it is easy.

But seriously give it a decade. Regular round Clocks won't exist anymore.
Be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren't used to an environment where excellence is expected.
