There is a brand new (to Canada) non-stimulant medication available since the beginning of January for ADHD in children and adults.

It's basically a clonidine type medication but isn't just slow release clonidine (which is available in the US but as far as I know not in Canada yet)

Something to consider for those who had too many problems with stimulants and haven't had much luck with Strattera...

My 6 year old son has ADHD combined, sensory processing dysfunction and autism. We haven't tried any medication but I'm curious what your experience has been. My fears are that he will be reliant on it forever, need increasing doses as he becomes dependent, ends up on multiple medications to deal with side effects or additional symptoms.. and that it will change his curious personality. Have you noticed any changes like these with your child? What meds are they on and for how long? What sort of side effects have you had and did the benefits outweigh the side effects?

Did you ever end up trying medication? Curious how it all worked out for you.

My dd has been on Vyvanse for about 6 years now and it is wonderful. She only has to take one pill in the morning and it lasts all day and it works better than any other drug she's been on. But these drugs are so individual and what works for one kids may not work for another. And some kids may had horrible side effects on one drug while another kid won't have any. It doesn't hurt to do your research and to talk to your doctor if you feel that one isn't working. Sometimes its just a matter of changing dosages and sometimes you have to change the medication completely.

Effexor is used for autism/ADHD? I have used this for myself when I had some bad depression and anxiety. Missing just 1 dose made things much worse, missing 3 was scary and going off the meds was terrible!

Thanks for asking :)
We gave up! Nothing seemed to work for my son. All the different drugs seemed to either snow him or make him aggressive or did not do anything at all!
Because he is not severe with his ADHD, I took him off everything and am only using a doTerra product called InTune on his back each am before school. It seems to help a little.
I am sure he could use more but at this time, he is better off not taking anything until something else comes on the market that might work better.
Plus his child psychiatrist was not helpful at all....he did NOT listen and did not follow up - time for him to leave the profession. Now we do not have one at all.
Hope this year goes well :)

Hope the school year goes well for him but sorry you could not find something that worked. My guy could not function in school without meds in fact middle school made me leave some there for if he missed his am dose. It took years to fine tune his meds though, with a great QA team

Have you considered getting his eyes checked by Dr Cam McCrodan? He posts on here. He is a specialist who said that ADHD symptoms can be seen when kids have visual deficits. True ADHD usually responds to meds so maybe it is caused by something else? We had our kids tested with him. Turns out she actually has ADHD and it wasn't just something we could fix with therapy, but I recommend ruling it out.
