Roofing companies - Any recommendations/reviews?

We need to have our roof replaced on our house and shed, and I was wondering if our wonderful KIV community could recommend any roofing companies (that you've used and recommend or not recommend). I know costs will vary - we've already had two companies provide us with quotes and that ranges from about $7500 to about $10,000 with taxes included. Of the two quotes, one was from a company that our neighbour used and the other one was recommended by a realtor friend of ours (he uses this company with his clients, so I'm guessing it's reliable?)

TIA! :D

good luck

Has anyone used Edward's Roofing? That was the company our friend recommended. My co-worker used Proline and she was happy with them but we also read an online review and they said to not use them.

We went with Parker Johnston after having them recommended by 3 or 4 different people. A KIV post a year or two ago was full of people saying to avoid them. We're very happy with our roof, the price was very good and the service was great. Honestly, they damaged a couple of our new deck railings when they were flinging old shingles off. They had a higher-up here to assess the situation in no time and they completely coordinated the repair and obviously paid for it all. I was disappointed that it happened but was extremely impressed with how they dealt with the situation and would recommend them and use them again.

Thanks Ander and Hope1.

I asked my DH who was the 1st company we got a quote from and it was Proline. We'll try to set up an appt with Parker Johnston to see what their pricing is like. We're in no hurry but would like to have it done before the end of summer to avoid the leaking problem we've had the past two fall terms.

I've heard good things about David Gronow Roofing. My boss used this company and was pleased with the quality and service.

We're about to put on a new roof and we've hired Aerial Roofing. One of our friends is a builder and that's who they use.

TyKy Roofing is a smaller family company. They've did my parents' last summer. Did great work! Came highly recommended.

We hired Parker Johnston in the summer of 2011.
I would recommend that you go with another company.
We would not use this company again.

We experienced a number of difficulties including a very rude representative, extended delays, lack of communication and not showing up when they said they would be there, sloppy work and minor property damage.
Their charges were high in comparison to other companies.

Good Luck!

I have no use for Parker Johnston. Way overpriced. Make sure that when you get quotes that they are all quoting on the same products ( shingles and roofing felt etc. ) as some products are a lot cheaper than others. Just having someone say $xxx.xx for a new roof doesn't work. It depends on the product they are going to use. Another factor is what type of material will it be. Some specialize in cedar shake/shingle or torch on, tar and gravel, asphalt shingle, metal, fiberglass, and a number of others. I re-did my roof last year and went metal with an independent private roofer from New Zealand where they do mostly metal roofs.
I just looked up the quote from Parker Johnson and it was $39,000 and I had it done for $26,000. I can't remember which one, could have been PJ, but their metal roof is their own profile so if you ever need a repair or to add on for an addition you would have to use the same company.

I wouldn't use Parker Johnston, either. When we had a new roof put on, they were one of the companies we called to get a quote. Someone came, looked at it, went away. We never heard back, got quotes from the other roofers we'd called, made our decision and had the roof replaced. Three months later, someone from Parker Johnston called to see if we still wanted an estimate on our roof.

We got our flat roof replaced last summer and used Procision. We weren't at all impressed with PJ (who came without letting us know, went on our roof, and drilled a hole in it).
Procision gave us a really good rate, came when they said they would, had the job done when they said they would, kept the areas clean (and their language while up there too).
If your roof is flat you need to make sure you have a certified flat roof installer doing the job.
I'd highly recommend these guys to everyone who wants good work done.

Hey Val a! Nice to see you online! Her roof does look great, BTW!

Just a thought regarding this... not only do you want to get a reputable company to install a roof, but you want someone whose going to be around to guarantee the roof and installation if something happens. Sometimes companies come and go and so who do you go to if a leak occurs??

The shingle in warranteed, yes, but what sort of warranty are they offering on the installation?? In doing home inspections with clients, sometimes even new construction homes with brand new roofs are not installed correctly. So, ask them if there have been complaints and how they have dealt with them.

I'd check any company you work with, with the Better Business Bureau, get references (like this), and see how long they have been in business and how long their workers have been with them, who supervises them, how they clean up the site, do they remove all nails and debris, do they sweep the area afterwards...

A home inspector I know recommends Square Deal. I haven't personally used them.

I second square deal. They did our last roof & are doing one for us this week. Ken, the owner, is fantastic and does a great job. They guarantee their craftsmanship for 10 years. We got 5 quotes for the roof that's going on this week & he was the second from the lowest but still uses top quality products. (I also understand that it's important to upgrade up 1 level of shingle, we've gone with the malarkey 40 year shingles)
The other thing about ken is that we had a massive, unexpected roof leak this week, I starting calling roofers at 745 am to get someone out to patch the leak right away. Ken was at my hous by 830, repaired 4 leaks & didn't have any expectation of getting the job, he knew he was quotingnalongnwith everyone else. The other roofers showed up towards the end of that day & the next. Ken probably saved our bathroom by showing up so quickly.
