Searching for a nice area to live in Victoria

Postby FlyingKyotoWoman on Sat Feb 13, 2016 7:04 pm

Here's our situation: We are a Japanese-American couple migrating to Canada in late May or early June of this year. We intend to settle in Victoria. (Currently we live in Kyoto, Japan.)

Our children are 6 and 4. Therefore, one should be starting 2nd grade in September and the other should be starting kindergarten.

We must rent, since we don't have any credit rating in Canada and we don't have the cash to buy a place. We are willing to pay up to CA$2,500 a month rent, as long as current exchange rates remain in effect. We'd like something a little cheaper, but we'll pay what we have to for a decent place.

Ideally, we want to start the kids in a school district where they will stay right up through middle and secondary school.

We're more interested in single-family homes rather than apartments or condos, but, again, we're flexible. We know that we can move after our first year if necessary.

I am a full-time housewife and my husband works online, so it doesn't really matter how long it takes us to get into downtown Victoria. But, it would be nice to be within cycling distance of shops (my husband and I are keen cyclists and by "cycling distance," I mean a few kms).

Thanks!

all the public schools in Victoria, Saanich and Sooke are good and allow your children to flow from elementary to middle to high school

some good places to check for rentals:

A major cycling route is called The Galloping Goose - you may see that referenced in ads
Many major streets have cycling lanes as well

Happy house hunting!

Thank you for sharing helpful sites! We are kind of interested in Gordon Head since this place has been mentioned as a family-friendly area quite a few times in the past forums. What do you think???

while I have not lived in Gordon Head, i know others who have and they like it. I have to say there really isn't, in my opinion, a bad neighbourhood in Victoria. Every area has its pluses and minuses. Transit seems good to Gordon Head and their are lots of amenities there (the Gordon Head rec centre is excellent)

I am in Fairfield and with young kids, I was close to schools, the ocean, shopping and transit. I concur with the PP who said Oaklands was a good neighbourhood. Really, all areas have great things going for them.

We live in Cordova Bay and really love it. The Lochside trail goes through it, so great for cycling. We are 10-15 min from everything, so nice and close.
