I think it's stupid that they will be imposing any fines or even making people separate it when there is still no composting facility on the island.

Currently all separated goods are just being dumped in general landfill.

CRD either has to ship this all off the island at a considerable cost and huge carbon footprint or just keep mixing it in with the regular landfill.

CRD needs to get their own crap straight before they tell others what to do.

We still get pick up at our door as we have a very long steep driveway.

We have a multi compartment compost box and compost nearly everything for our garden. We can't compost things like chicken bones or oyster shells so they get bagged and put in our green bin. So now the garbage man comes and empties our garbage and then looks into the green bin and takes out the one, two at most, small bags of organics and throws them in with the garbage. Later in the day the organic waste truck shows up and there's nothing to take. One day I asked the garbage man about this and was told "it's only a couple of bags". I asked why don't we cancel the organics truck then? He said that would open a can of worms as to why. He said that I do this for many on my route. I guess maybe he will get the fine?

To me the CRD compost program is just another hidden form of taxation.

Hey, we didn't raise your property taxes!

No, you hid them under mandated user fees.

:x

And fines. Just another hidden form of taxation.

I'm in Colwood and have many of the same questions about this. We pay for our garbage pickup (Alpine) and I'm wondering how they're going to know if you have food garbage or general household garbage. I'm not opposed to composting and have looked at the composting website and after doing some reading, for us, I think the 'green cone composter' makes the most sense, you can place it in a garden and put flowers around it. It quickly dissolved kitchen scraps, bones, breads, etc., and then leeches the liquid waste into the soil to help the plants grow. It's not cheap, but it seems to make the most sense. Because of our busy lives, I often forget about what day the recycle truck comes by - so I usually bundle up my recycling and once a month or once every two months, I take it up to Hartland (it's cheaper than taking it to Alpine and they recycle a lot more there). But, I"m really wondering what to do if they impose this law about kitchen waste.

Hmmm green cone I've heard is supposed to be rat resistant. Somehow doubt it will be bear resistant and we have a regular visitor :? We compost, but I simply do not want to start dealing with bones, etc.

Well, I signed up for the kitchen scrap program with Alpine beginning of the month but have not received my containers and my next garbage pickup is in a couple of weeks. Now what? Guess I have to call them next week. I don't want to get fined if I don't have the containers.

I just got off the phone with Alpine as I have not received my containers either and I was told they are a little behind in the delivery of them and not to worry you don't have to separate until you receive your containers.

We are with Alpine and received one notice back in May I think. My husband and I were just commenting that we were shocked stickers had not be placed on bins giving notice. I have heard it on the radio but only because I commute and listen to/from work. If it were not for that, I would have no idea. How can they find people regardless as the garage service simply dumps the bin filled with bags into the truck.
