    Let us bring one of our programs to you!

    The Maritime offers programs that can be delivered in the classroom, library, boardroom, or just about anywhere else a class or group meets. Our programs bring history to life creating a fun place for students to engage, learn, and explore! They are designed to meet and compliment the learning objectives in BC school curriculum. For your convenience, we have highlighted appropriate grade levels for each program, but are willing to work with you to tailor your program to meet your needs.

    All programs are delivered by Maritime programming staff.  Programs are typically 90 minutes but we can adjust to meet the needs of your group.

    Cost: $5 per child with a minimum of 15 children

    Additional mileage costs may apply.

    In the Navy 

    Social Studies, Physical Education
    Grades 4-8

    The Maritime’s brand new cross-curricular program connects the centenary of the First World War directly with the youth of today.  Ready your platoon of newly enlisted recruits to engage in the basic training drills a soldier or sailor would have experienced in 1914.  Explore the uniform of the Canadian soldier, learn how to throw a grenade, and discover the amazing stories behind Victoria and British Columbia’s involvement in this global conflict. To book your program, please contact our programs office by email at [email protected] or call 250-385-4222 ext 112.

    Maritime Music!

    Music, Fine Arts, Physical Fitness, Social Studies
    Grades 4-7

    The Maritime’s new cross-curricular program explores the world of the sailor in the 19th century.  Students will learn about the origins of the sea shanty and the ship-board movements that they accompany. By the end of the session they will be singing along!  Explore the clothing and the artwork of sailors on Canadian and British vessels and how they passed their time with music and dance.  The program finishes with a lesson in scrimshaw, which each student can take home with them! To book your program, please contact our programs office by email at [email protected] or call 250-385-4222 ext 112.

    Pirates and Privateers

    Social Studies
    Grade Level: K-3

    Follow the change from privateers to pirates as wartime raiders became outright thieves. This engaging program deals with tactics, weapons and lifestyle, and the consequences for pirates who were caught.     Salty Sea Science

    Science
    Grade: K-5

    Water is essential for life, yet this amazing commodity is misunderstood, abused and in danger of running dry. This kitchen sink science program leads students through a series of entertaining and enlightening experiments that illustrate the unique nature of water and instill a special appreciation of this magical compound.     Captain Cook and the Age of Discovery

    Social Studies
    Grade: 4-6

    James Cook ranks among the world’s greatest explorers and mapmakers. The history of long distance travel by sea, the science of navigation, and the clashes between cultures are all discussed in this hands-on, energetic session.     Hudson’s Bay Company and Fort Victoria

    Social Studies
    Grade: 10-12

    Learn about the importance of the fur trade and learn about early trade on the Pacific Coast, relations with local Aboriginal Peoples, and how Fort Victoria became the main trading post on the Pacific Coast.     Birthday Parties

    Let Maritime Museum staff make your child’s next birthday party truly memorable! We will deliver a fascinating and educational experience your child is not likely to forget in either a pirate or mermaid theme. Duration: 120 minutes

    Pirate Party

    Young pirate apprentices will learn about the history of pirates and privateers and hear stories about mythical sea creatures from one of our staff pirates. Children will learn the art of scrimshaw carving, create their own map and embark on a fools gold treasure hunt. Our pirate will make pirates out of the young sprogs with pirate tattoos, wanted posters and other pirate style games.

    Mermaid Party

    One of our staff mermaids will transform your guests into young mermaids. Guests will start by learning about mermaid culture through the history and folklore surrounding fabled denizens of the deep, from Sirens to Selkies and the sea monsters that inhabit their world. Your guests will create a mermaid’s grotto map, mermaid currency and engage in a golden treasure hunt. By the end of your party, guests will transform into young mermaids with mermaid hair and mermaid tattoos.

    Mermaid and Pirate Combo Party

    Can’t decide which party? Get the best of both worlds with a combined party! Our staff mermaid and staff pirate will tailor your child’s special day with selected activities from both parties!
