Talk Show: Perinatal and Postpartum Depression

Duration: 26:30

New Parents Need a Circle of Support

Families sometimes have unrealistic expectations about what life will be like with a new baby and they need both emotional and practical support. It can be a difficult experience for a parent to admit that help is needed. Friends and family can look for signs, such as parents who are feeling hopeless or angry. Withdrawal and changes in eating or sleeping patterns are other indications. Medical screening is available.

Both Fathers and Mothers can have Perinatal or Postpartum Depression

Any form of being a parent can lead to risk of perinatal or postpartum depression as these are not biological conditions. Self-care for parents, involving nutrition, exercise, adequate sleep, time for self, and support are important ways to enhance mental and physical health for the whole family.
